Despite it’s reputation as one of the scariest monsters of cinema, the Alien Xenomorph stars in a super cute new picture book by artist Joey Spiotto. In The Alien Next Door, the artist imagines the classic badass creature as a kind and loving companion.
In an interview with i09, Spiotto explained: “The best part of doing the book was actually that it got done at all. I had a very limited window to get the book done. It also happened to be right as my son was born. I started this project about 2 weeks after welcoming a new baby boy into our lives. For those people out there with children, they know how insane those first few weeks at home can be… throw in a crazy-tight turnaround right on top of that insanity and you have a complete recipe for disaster. 20th Century Fox and Titan were wonderful to work with, they were very hands-off and had great feedback on the sketches and ideas I was coming up with. I am a huge fan of the Alien films, so this project was really a dream come true.”
The book is officially licensed, though the artist doesn’t know whether any of the directors or actors at the heart of the franchise have seen it. He did say that: “I hope that they enjoy how I totally made their horrifyingly scary creature cute and lovable.”
The book’s synopsis reads: ‘See a new, caring side to the legendary science fiction monster as he tends to Jonesy the cat, endeavors to keep his house cleaner than the Nostromo, and searches for his place on a cold, new, alien world: Earth. From facehuggers to feather dusters, discover how the perfect killing machine relaxes after a day of scaring space marines.’
