The Horror Artist Behind That $69 Million NFT

You have probably seen something of a buzz recently around NFT sales. NFTs, ‘non-fungible tokens’, are unique files that live on a blockchain and are able to verify ownership of a work of digital art. They’ve been hitting headlines in the past 12 months for the incredible prices some of them have sold for.

Mike Winkelmann, aka BEEPLE had enjoyed a dedicated fanbase for years, but had only ever sold his artwork for under $100 until October 2020. In March, an NFT of his dark artworks sold for a staggering  $69 million at Christie’s. The sale positions him “among the top three most valuable living artists,” according to the auction house.

While few of us can afford to spend millions on unique pieces of artwork, we can still enjoy the creations of this talented horror artist. Mike has become renowned for his scary re-imaginings of pop culture figures and well known characters. He often depicts eerie visions of the future as well as commenting on current events through his artwork. Check out some of our favourites, and find out more about the artist here.
