Slasher Game ‘Last Year’ reaches crowdfunding target
In one of the years biggest indie horror success stories, slasher video game ‘Last Year’ has surpassed it’s $50,000 Kickstarter goal by tens of thousands of dollars. One of the most interesting things about this project is the multiple perspectives and angles the game takes, allowing you to play as both the slasher, and the stereotypical high school characters he attempts to massacre. The creators are clearly horror fans first, with the look of the game so far being reminiscent of 80s and 80s classics.
Last Year is an asymmetrical multiplayer game in the same vein as Evolve, Damned and The Flock. Within the game, a group of five player-controlled teens must survive against a psychopath who’s also player-controlled.There’s even a range of slasher characters (pictured below in early sketch form), to keep the gameplay fresh, with an assortment of awesome looking weapons.
The team have also taken care to include some innovative and new features to the game, including ‘Choke Points’ – “These are time challenges where the Survivors will barricade themselves behind a door to try and reach a new area of the map. To reach the new area you’ll need to pick the locks but you’ll have only 30 seconds to pick it and escape before the killer is able to break open the barricade and storm inside for a multi kill.” The name ‘Choke Points’ makes me wonder if there’s going to be a Kane Hodder homage in there somewhere.
The team behind the game have worked on some pretty impressive titles, including entries in the Far Cry, Assassians Creed, and Crysis franchises. There’s still a few days to go on the Kickstarter, where you can also check out some great artwork and info on the game.
