With a stealth launch on Snapchat, Sickhouse, a horror thriller produced by Indigenous Media, starring digital influencers Andrea Russett and Sean O’Donnell, becomes the first-ever scripted film, shot in real time, designed for mobile viewing. Sickhouse, which was experienced by millions on Snapchat and other social platforms during its live run due to the strong social following of its digitally savvy cast, is now available for pre-order exclusively on Vimeo where it will debut as a feature length film on Wednesday, June 1.
About a group of friends obsessed with social media whose excursion into the woods to explore the lore of Sickhouse turns deadly, Sickhouse leads viewers on a journey that has unsuspected consequences for all concerned, including the audience. Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Hannah Macpherson, Sickhouse was designed to be told through a series of snaps but also live on as a linear film. Shot over five days, April 29-May 3, the journey of the main characters occurred in real time, blurring the lines of truth and fiction. The snaps are now being edited together into a Director’s Cut with substantial additional footage to create the first “made for mobile” feature film.
“Thanks to Hannah, Andrea and Sean and the rest of the team who were willing to take a leap of faith and join Indigenous in creating an exciting new storytelling format, Sickhouse has been able to push boundaries and engage audiences in a very visceral way. We’re thrilled to now be able to offer the full version with our partners at Vimeo,” said Jake Avnet, COO, Indigenous Media.
“We are extremely excited to be a part of this unique and forward-thinking release strategy and look forward to bringing the film directly to fans around the world,” said Derek Dressler, Head of Content Acquisitions for Vimeo.
Andrea Russett is one of the fastest-growing female comedians on YouTube with 2.5 million subscribers and more than 184 million views. She got her start with a nationally syndicated radio talk show as the youngest syndicated DJ in the US. In 2014 she had a supporting role in Expelled, which debuted as the #1 film on iTunes; starred as the principal character in the comedic web-miniseries Breaking Out and has an upcoming cameo in the FOX film Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates opposite Zac Efron and Adam Devine.
In addition to his 1 million followers on Instagram, Sean O’Donnell has built a name within the theatrical community, most recently cast in the film #Speedball alongside Eric Roberts. Rounding out the cast are Lukas Gage, seen in Paramount’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, and newcomer Laine Neil. Jon Avnet, Rodrigo Garcia and Jake Avnet serve as executive producers. Kip Pastor, Clay Reed, and Andrea Russett also produce.
