Paolo Curcio Carves ‘Hobo Nickels’ Based on Horror Movies
They might not be the first art material that comes to mind, but ‘Hobo Nickels’ have a long tradition. It’s a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The US nickel coin was favored because of its size, thickness and relative softness.
Artist, Paolo Curcio (aka MrThe) has taken this artform to a whole new level. His technique of etching into standard clad coins completely transforms them from nearly useless currency into multilayered portraits of skulls, horror icons, and more.
