Jude Buffum: 8 Bit Butcher
Have you ever played an old school Nintendo game and thought ‘wow – I bet Bowser would taste great!’? Neither had we, until we discovered these awesome 8 Bit butcher diagrams by Jude Buffum. Featuring some of your favourite characters from childhood, we don’t know whether to be scared or hungry.
JUDE BUFFUM graduated with a BFA in Graphic Arts and Design from the Tyler School of Art in 2001, where he later taught design and typography courses for five years. Once illustration became his focus, he began teaching a design course for illustration majors at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. While he was a part of the design and illustration duo Headcase Design (2002–2007), Jude designed books for such pop-culture phenomena as the Broadway show “Wicked” and HBO’s “The Sopranos”, as well as the best-selling book The Baby Owner’s Manual, which he also illustrated. Other clients include the New York Times, AOL, Target, Sony, Courtney Love, Square/Enix, UPS, Disney and Toyota/SCION. Jude’s design and illustration have received awards from The Society of Illustrators, Graphis, 3×3, Communication Arts, AIGA, Print, and American Illustration, and his non-commercial work has been exhibited internationally.

Jude explains his inspiration for the designs – “For the SCION sponsored and Giant Robot curated show “Pixel Pushers”, I decided to explore the carnivorous side of the world of video games. Though I am still a meat eater, I have a lot of vegan friends and have been exploring the ethical, environmental, and health impact of consuming an animal-based diet. That, and my long-time obsession with butcher diagrams, were the inspiration for this series.”
