On this day 1940, one of the most famous villains in pop culture history made his comic book debut. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of DC Comics’ greatest villain, Suicide Squad director David Ayer shared the first true preview of musician/actor Jared Leto as Batman’s nemesis The Joker which you can check out above. This new image, along with the Leto photo of the actor holding a camera, are inspired by classic Joker artwork from the comic books which you can see below.
The infamous Joker smile looks a little more downplayed in this latest incaration, and Leto’s portrayal has been updated with tattoos reading ‘HAHAHAH’ all over his body and ‘Damaged’ across his forehead. In The Killing Joke, the Joker is introduced as a failed stand-up comic turned small-time hood who is chemically disfigured and driven insane all in “one bad day.” Ayer has previously hinted that his Joker will have more in common with comic book lore than previous versions seen in big budget film adaptations.
Suicide Squad is set for release on August 5, 2016. It stars Will Smith (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress) and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg) alongside the Joker.
