Alex Solis’ Icons Unmasked Book Successfully Funded
We imagine that Chicago-based artist Alex Solis has a lot of fun creating the concepts for his Icon’s Unmasked illustration series. In his images, Alex imagines the true faces behind various pop culture icons. The hilarious drawings also verge on creepy, as child-friendly figures often shed their skin to reveal a more sinister true form.
Alex’s illustrations have gained a lot of fans, so he turned to Kickstarter to fund a book collating the best of the series. He explained:
“Ever wonder if the characters you see on TV, in movies and in comic books are hiding something behind their masks? That perhaps they’re really someone — or something — else? Discover and see iconic characters like you never seen them before. Finally all masks are off and their true identity revealed.
In Icons Unmasked, I’m trying to bring a new sense of discovery to characters everyone has seen hundreds of times. I wanted to recreate the experience of what it might be like to see one iconic character from your childhood for the first time as an adult.”
The campaign was a huge success, having reached over three times it’s initial goal of $7000. It was fully funded four days after launch, with additional rewards being added when it surpassed expectations. When it reached 300% of it’s initial goal, Alex revealed an additional reward book detailing the adorably brutal circle of life.
