Horror for the Weekend: Friday the 13th edition

The weekend is upon us again, and we have a few suggestions for your horror viewing over the next three days. It’s Friday the 13th, so it’s time for the usual tradition once again.

You have a choice of ten Friday the 13th movies, Freddy vs. Jason, or the remake (which we would not recommend). I’m having a bit of a marathon this evening, but I’d suggest trying to squeeze in Jason Takes Manhattan. It’s ridiculous and silly, but one of my favourite entries in the franchise.

If you’re looking for something different in the theme, you might want to check out the Friday the 13th TV series. It was originally going to tie in to the movies, but the idea was scrapped and the show launched with no relation to Jason. The series follows an old antique dealer who made a pact with the Devil to sell cursed antiques. When he dies, his store is inherited by his niece Micki and her cousin Ryan. With the help of Jack Marshak, they fight to retrieve the antiques from the people who bought them to stop them from causing harm.

If you fancy a documentary, there’s some great ones examining the Friday the 13th franchise. Crystal Lake Memories would be our first recommendation. Corey Feldman (star of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter) narratesthe film, which features interviews with approximately 150 cast and crew members from all twelve Friday the 13th films, many of whom have never before appeared in on-camera interviews. Interview subjects include Kane Hodder, Robert Englund, Tom Savini, Danielle Panabaker, Sean S. Cunningham, Derek Mears, Betsy Palmer, Wes Craven, Robert Shaye, and Alice Coopeer.

Have a happy Friday the 13th, and a great weekend!
