From the Press Release:
Horror Block, the world’s largest Horror subscription boxservice, in collaboration with world-renowned horror magazine, Rue Morgue, is proud to announce the winners of its first annual Horror Block Short Film Festival. In total, 67 films were submitted by filmmakers from around the world. These films were judged by a panel of industry experts and winners were chosen according to various criteria. Taking first place was “Sinners,” submitted by Stephen Hall of Ireland.
“We couldn’t be happier with the quality of indie films that were submitted for the Horror Block Film Fest,” says Russ Montague, president of Nerd Block and one of the competition’s judges. “Horror is such a rich genre for creative expression and we certainly saw that with this year’s submissions. It was tough work choosing the winners!” The well-executed and creepy “Lady in the Walls” crept in at second place while “Scared to Death” clawed its way to a third place. Awards were also given for “Best Scream” and “Best FX,” which went to “The Family that Preys” and “Playtime,” respectively.
“Our community of subscribers passionately love Horror, and also support and love what we’re doing with Horror Block,” adds Montague. “This was our way to give back to that community. There are so many exceptionally creative and talented people making films these days, and funding them can become as big a challenge as the filmmaking process itself, so this was an incredibly fun way of spurring a lot of these indie directors into making some very cool films!” In addition to giving out $20,000 in cash prizes to winners of the competition, a DVD compilation of the films will be included in an upcoming Horror Block. These winning films will also be available to stream on Nerd Block’s YouTube page
