Finalist Spotlight: Katie English

Katie is 16 years old, from the North East coast of the United States. She has been drawing since she was able to hold a pencil, but has only gotten serious with it in the last 2 years. She’s entirely self-taught, and has only taken her first art class this past fall. She’s really into character design, concept art, illustration, comics, and animation, and would love to make a career in one or several of these fields after high school! She loves to paint whenever she’s not drawing! She never leaves home without a sketchbook and some drawing pencils! Her style of drawing changes upon what she’s drawing or how she is feeling for the most part. Her favourite horror movies include Zombieland, Silent Hill,The Conjuring, and really any newer horror flicks that could be considered good! She likes to participate in a lot of different fandoms, and actively runs a Tumblr blog.

Tell us about your re-design concept.
My re-design concept is basically The Invisible Man, as I believe he would be today: A Hipster.
His loosened wrappings create a totally post-modern look, and checkered scarves are so in this season! Haha, but in all seriousness, I think he makes a pretty chill hipster!

Where did you get the idea for this concept?
I’m not totally sure how I got the idea actually! I found this competition through Tumblr, and as soon as I looked over the list of monsters, the idea kind of hit me. I really enjoy drawing hipster fashion and such, plus I really just saw it as a perfect fit right then and there! After all, don’t hipsters usually say they feel so invisible???

How long did your piece take to complete?
I think it took somewhere around 3 to 4 hours, but I don’t totally remember the exact total, since I worked on it over two days after school.

Why did you pick The Invisible Man?
I picked The Invisible Man for three reasons:
One, I’ve always been fascinated by his character and spin-offs of his character. Something about it seems really cool to me!
Two, as soon as I saw him, my idea for what I was going to draw totally hit me!
And three, one of my friends at school loves The Invisible Man, and talks about him a lot, so he’s also one of the monsters that I knew the most about!
