Creatures of the Night – Stunning and Spooky Melanistic Animals

You have probably heard of albino animals; the rare condition that causes a lack of pigment in skin and hair. But even rarer than albinism is melanism, which refers to black pigment. This condition results in some striking, spooky, entirely black animals that look like true creatures of the night. Even fluffy, cute critters are given a Halloween makeover if they have this condition.

Many species have developed this entirely black colouring as an evolutionary advantage, with these animals often becoming the strongest and most likely to survive due to their ability to hunt at night. In some species it remains a rare condition, but in others it can become common. For example, the black panther is actually melanistic jaguars.
