Archie Comics Reveals “Sabrina” Horror Series

I grew up around the Sabrina comics and watching Melissa Joan Hart play her in the TV show, but now Sabrina the Teenage Witch is getting a brand new comic series with a darker side. Sabrina will star in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Robert Hack.

Building on the success of Archie Comics’ revolutionary “Afterlife With Archie”, Archie Comics has proved that typically wholesome, innocent characters can thrive in a more mature and adult-oriented setting. First there was Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ clever spoof of the Archie gang in Criminal: Last of the Innocent. Then last year, Archie Comics themselves re-imagined Riverdale as the site of an unholy zombie apocalypse. The success of Afterlife with Archie has inspired the publisher to continue revamping its characters with a darker, more mature spin. And this week they revealed that Sabrina the Teenage Witch is next in line for this treatment.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina won’t be set in the same universe as Afterlife with Archie. Instead, the book will be a period piece set in the 1960’s that explores Sabrina’s troubled origins as she struggles to maintain her secret and live a halfway normal life. The usual supporting cast will be present, including aunts Hilda and Zelda, cat Salem, and villainess Madame Satan. “One day, Sabrina’s going to be the most powerful sorceress who’s ever lived — Archie’s equivalent of Doctor Strange — but right now, she’s a 16-year-old girl who’s figuring out who she wants to be and if she’s going to prom or not,” Aguirre-Sacasa told USA Today

The writer also teased that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will strike a different tone than Afterlife with Archie, with the book “telling a compelling, surprising, emotional story that’s perhaps scarier and more grownup than what we’ve seen before with these characters. It’s never been about the easy shock, it’s about going deeper and peeling back layers. Sabrina will hopefully continue that,” according to Aguirre-Sacasa.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 will be released in October 2014.
