Everyone loves an advent calendar, but if you’re tired of sweets and chocolates, we have something more horrific to share with you. The festive fiends at Glass Eye Pix want you to have a scary December to remember! They’ve created an advent calendar which showcases 25 creepy independent short films – perfect for daily December viewing.
The festival began when artist Beck Underwood created a misfit toys diorama and turned it into an advent calendar. He began to think about the windows in the image, and imagined what sinister secrets lay behind each. Then he asked 25 filmmakers to create a short based on this concept. Each filmmaker was assigned a specific date and given the props that were used in that window to use in their short.
The resulting 2008 Creepy Christmas Online Film Festival premiered Dec 1st, 2008 and was met with much enthusiasm.
Now, ten years later, the festival is back! Original fest alumni along with some terrifyingly talented newcomershave been given a holiday-themed word as their prompt.
This year’s filmmakers include Glass Eye Pix CEO Larry Fessenden (HABIT, WENDIGO), GEP regulars Jenn Wexler (THE RANGER), Glenn McQuaid (I SELL THE DEAD), Graham Reznick (Shudder’s “Deadwax”), Mickey Keating (PSYCHOPATHS), Joe Maggio (BITTER FEAST), James McKenney (SATAN HATES YOU), JT Petty (THE BURROWERS, HELLBENDERS), and many fresh faces – including animators Joy + Noelle, (HUMAN KINDOF), award-winning puppet theater director Jessica Grindstaff (PHANTOM LIMB COMPANY), Gothic impresario Voltaire (GOTHIC HOMEMAKING SHOW), young filmmakers from The Lower East Side Girls Club, and a host of other unexpected contributors.
