Peroxide dye, cigarettes, lipstick, leather, sex, drugs and rock and roll have always been a sweet combination when creating cult classics, at least that’s how things were in the 90’s. You’ve all probably heard of Chucky the red haired killer good guy doll that wields a sharp knife as he goes around killing people. He’s been around since the 80’s terrifying the masses but the ginger haired fiend is not who I’m here to talk about.
Chucky is an iconic staple in the history of cult horror but very rarely is his beautiful bride Tiffany Valentine Ray heralded for her crowning glory as a fatal femme. From the moment I was introduced to blonde bombshell I knew that the sweet, squeaky, voice that was the Bride of Chucky was about to find a special place in my morbid little heart. So, without further ado I give to you my woman of horror Ms Tiffany Valentine Ray. Bride of Chucky.
I love Tiff. she is a fun, relatable character and the fact that the beautiful Jennifer Tilly portrayed her makes Tiff even more of a badass. Tiffany doesn’t get the recognition she deserves by a long shot and that makes me sad yet also happy because now I get to showcase why the beautiful doll bride is worthy of such a title.
Beautiful and feisty what isn’t there to love about her? Tiffany is such a strong character one that many women can relate too. Even though she is a psychotic murderer she somehow seems to justify her every kill making her a completely sympathetic character.
Tiffany is just like any of us. She struggles with finding love, hence why she is fond of asking ‘why the good ones are always taken?’ she is sure of her sexuality, confident, loves to bake, get dolled up (pun intended) drink champagne whilst watching Bride of Frankenstein soaking in a bubble bath and committing a bit of bloody murder on the side. (every girl has to have a hobby right!) to any horror fan miss Tiff is the ideal woman. She has the heart of an innocent but the wit of a cunning mastermind so don’t get your wires crossed, there is a reason as to why I have chosen her to be my WOMAN IN HORROR. I promise.
“My mother always said love was supposed set you free. But that’s not true, Chucky. I’ve been a prisoner of my love for you for a very long time. Now it’s payback time.”
A daydreamer, the peroxide, PVC clad blonde often dreams of finding love and marriage. Tiff’s dream is to find the perfect man, and live happily ever after. She is a woman who harbors fairy tale dreams and is often faced with heartbreak after heartbreak.
Tiffany suffers a great loss when her lifeline to her human form flat-lines forcing her soul to be projected into a bride doll as a sarcastic, cruel punishment performed by Chucky after she locked him up in a baby playpen for her own wicked amusement. (That’s what happens when you displease miss Tiff.)
Tiffany often struggles to keep her emotions at bay. She is lonely and hard done by. Her character is strong but greatly flawed, her constant need for love is her one biggest weakness. Love is dangerous and in Tiffany’s case, it’s a killer.
However, there is also a brutal side to the beautiful possessed doll bride. She is smart and quick thinking. She is able to come up with creative ways to kill her victims (a quality that drives Chucky wild) she is insatiable and sarcastic. She knows what she wants, when she wants and how she wants it. Tiffany is in control of her life and although she doesn’t live luxuriously she certainly makes do with what she has and damn right owns the place whilst doing it.
So why isn’t Tiff more celebrated as a woman in horror?
Granted she is not a final girl. She is not the typical Laurie Strode but it is for that reason why I think she is the perfect embodiment for a mistress of macabre. Tiff is a love sick killer with a passion for baking cookies and making Swedish meatballs. Tiff can cut a throat as much as she can cut a joint of beef. So much so that she would make Martha Stewart blush!
“Chucky: What would Martha Stewart say?”
“Tiffany: Fuck Martha Stewart! Martha Stewart can kiss my shiny plastic butt! Here I am, slaving away over a hot stove, making cookies… making Swedish meatballs, and for what? A man who doesn’t appreciate me! For a man that can’t even wash one fucking dish! For a man who isn’t even a man at all where it counts, if you get my drift! -to Jade- Take it from me honey, plastic is no substitute for a nice hunk of wood!”
I could have had my pick at any lady of horror but i had to settle on Tiff. She is beautiful, sexy and malicious three qualities that earn her the right to be celebrated as a woman in horror. She is far from stupid, she gives great advice, is very stylistic and sees herself as a cutesy homemaker. (In her twisted little way of course. This is Tiff we’re talking about) she collects doll parts in order to resurrect her dead lover, and proudly sees herself as a traditionalist!
What makes Tiffany my chosen woman in horror is her humanity. Underneath the plastic she suffers the same as we do and for that I can connect with her character. She is the wife with the knife. She is the Bride of Chucky!
