José Pedro Lopes’ first horror feature The Forest of Lost Souls has just revealed it’s theatrical poster, release date and trailer. The film, known in it’s native Portugal as “A Floresta das Almas Perdidas” is the first feature by Lopes following a career as a short film producer.
The film features newcomers Daniela Love and Mafalda Banquart alongside actors Jorge Mota (Manoel de Oliveira’s “Voyage until the end of the World”) and Lígia Roque (João Botelho’s “The Northen Land”.
Imagined like a matryoska doll, The Forest of Lost Souls is an unsettling horror tale inside of a coming of age drama, with a poetic drama about life giving away into a suspenseful “70s slasher-style” second act. It was shot in a beautiful and haunting black and white in several locations of Northern Portugal and Zamora (Spain).
The film is set in a dense and remote forest, Portugal’s most popular place for suicide. In a summer morning, two strangers meet within the woods. Ricardo (Jorge Mota) is a sad old man, who gave up on life when his older daughter, Irene (Lilia Lopes), took her life in a romantic pact gone wrong in the glacier lake that rests hidden deep in the forest.Carolina (Daniela Love) is an eccentric, unstable young girl who finds all things related to death are fun.
The hybrid is premiering in Portugal in late February in Fantasporto ahead of a theatrical tour later in the year. In April the film will have its African debut in Camiff 2017 – Cameroon International Film Festival.
