Photographer’s Morgue Portraits Are Intimately Haunting and Fascinating (NSFW)

by

Even those of us who love horror movies find death uncomfortable. The fear of the unknown, the cold stillness of the morgue and cemetery, the inevitability – it sends shivers down the spine. Jeffrey Silverthorne is an American photographer mainly known for taking pictures which capture death.

Between 1972 and 1991, Silverthorne captured images at the Rhode Island morgue. The images are shocking, striking, and haunting – showing people who died of both natural and unnatural causes. Some of them may be shocking, but they’re fascinating pieces of art that show a side of humanity we rarely catch a glimpse of.
