The Museum With 100 Giant Skulls Flooding the Hallways

No, it’s not the graveyard of giants! Australian artist Ron Mueck has unveiled his largest installation ever with Mass, a collection of 100 sculpted skulls. Commissioned for the National Gallery of Victoria’s International Triennial, visitors to the exhibit find themselves face to face with skulls that tower over them as they explore the museum.

Mueck says he referenced Cambodia’s killing fields, Paul Cezanne’s Pyramid of Skulls and the Paris catacombs in his research. Each of the one hundred skulls has slight variations from the others.

“Mass intrudes into the 18th Century Galleries like a glacier inching across a landscape, crowding out the powdered, bewigged lords and ladies, a reminder of all our fates,” the artist explained.
