Ami Sueki came up with the idea of a glow-in-the-dark ramen shop in a dream. At first glance, the Atlanta shop looks like many other noodle bars -but inside a unique dining experience is on offer. Using bioluminescent ingredients – a mixture of quinine and natural food colouring, everything in the shop glows in the dark.
The concept is also influenced by Japanese folklore. There is a traditional story of spirits who operated their own ramen shop, serving dinner to the lost souls that have been left wandering the earth.
The collaboration, which brings together designers and chefs from across America, London and Japan, certainly promises an alien experience. There is something eerie, yet stunning about the darkness of the restaurant and the glowing dishes, desserts and drinks. Even the food appears to be alien, with noodles looking more like the tentacles of a bizarre space creature.
