Eric Millikin is an experimental artist from Detroit whose most recent project is a series of photo portraits of monsters, each built out of Halloween candy. He calls this series “Totally Sweet.” The series includes everything from classic monsters like The Bride of Frankenstein to modern killers from slasher movies like “Friday the 13th.” Hidden among the candy within each portrait is Millikin’s pet tarantula, Lemmy.

The full series is published by the Detroit Free Press at http://www.freep.com/totallysweet where people are invited to request more “Totally Sweet” monster portraits they would like to see.

Several of Millikin’s other art series involve horror themes. His “Hollywood Witch Trials” series includes portraits of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan based on their crime mug shots, stylized to look like witches, and combined with excerpts from transcripts of the Salem Witch Trials. He is currently working on a new collection of illustrated experimental poetry inspired by Gothic romance novels from the Victorian era through the 1970s.

Millikin attended Michigan State University where he studied fine art and creative writing in their Honors College, paying his way through school by dissecting and embalming cadavers in the MSU human anatomy lab.  He received a BFA in Studio Art in 1998. Since then, his artwork has been featured by FEARnet, WIRED, CNN, and Monday Night Football, and by congressmen on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
